I recently found a mixed tape I made back in high school. It was a little terrifying. I probably almost deserve the inevitable infliction of Justin Bieber (or something similarly horrifying) in a few years when my girls reach tweenhood.
Joni Mitchell's 'Blue'; indeed, all of her early albums, are easily accessible, certainly as much so as others you've mentioned here. Don's waste any more time.
Don't be put off by Steve Reich. I was first played Music for 18 Musicians as a teenager back in the 80s and loved it. Then at college I heard a live performance of Tehillim, and a bit later was lucky enough to see one of the first performances of City Life in the UK - Steve Reich gave a pre-concert talk and is a really great bloke.
piratestan: "Blue" is my favorite Joni record, with "Hejira" a close second. I'm actually not scared to approach her music :)
Colin Reed: I enjoy most of the Steve Reich recordings I have, but I don't really grasp the theory behind his compositions (phase shifting, etc.). I would kill to see a live performance of a Reich piece, though.
Jonie Mitchell is amazing, and I'm in love with Bob Dylan
ReplyDeleteI once fell in love with U2's "War". Passion faded away but one of these days we made out for the sake of old times, and it was cool.

ReplyDeleteRock and Roll will NEVER die !
ReplyDeleteVinyl still rules.
ReplyDeleteThs is so true.
ReplyDeleteI hate Tom Waits, though.
The Waits-Hater must be banned forevermore.
ReplyDeleteWaits-haters should not be banned. They should be converted!
ReplyDeleteHaving just recently discovered Tom Waits, I'm glad I did.
ReplyDeleteFantastic post btw.

How anyone could ever hate Tom Waits is truly beyond me.
